TEREGLIO - frazione di Coreglia Antelminelli - latitudine: 44° 3' 21" - longitudine: 10° 33' 48"

[200/3f-046t7.jpg]

Most visitors arrive by RyanAir or other airlines to Pisa Airport. Others come by car. Arriving from the south and centre of the country, all routes converge on Lucca. From the north, there are options to take more scenic routes over and through the Appennines. Those coming from Liguria or the Cinque Terre may opt to cross the Apuane alps and follow the beautiful drive down the Serchio valley from Aula.

Below is some guidance for various routes and methods of travel. We assume that those who are touring and arrive down the valley must be capable navigators who will only need our help for the final leg of the journey from the Serchio valley road. Once in the Serchio valley, you need to aim for Barga or Coreglia, then pick up the information below on getting to Teregli.

from Pisa

There are car hire firms at Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport.

Public transport in Italy is economical and convenient, though services up to our area are infrequent. To travel from Pisa Airport by train or bus, you need to go via Pisa Centrale, the central station of Pisa, and thence via Lucca.

From the airport there is a bus to the Central Station, and also trains, though these are less frequent. Timetable info and tickets for both can be got at the Information office at the extreme right handend of the concourse as you come out from the baggage hall (extreme left hand end as you go in from the car park). There is also a ticket machine at the bus stop. The trains leave from the opposite end of the concourse, the buses from a stop over to your right as you exit the building. Another alternative if you are travelling light is to walk to the central station. It is about 15-20 minutes' walk from the airport.

If you used the train to Pisa Centrale, you probably arrived at platform 14, or one of the platforms distant from the booking hall. Use the tunnel to get there and check your onward train. Note that there are two screens with train times. One is marked 'arrivi', be sure to look at the other, 'partenze', for the departing train times. The same applies to the large printed timetable. (On your return to the airport at the end of your stay, watch out for the same trap: I have seen many people relying on the wrong screen for information!). Lucca trains often leave from platforms 1to or 2to. This little 'to' stands for 'tronco ovest', western section, and these are really separate platforms both located at the western end of platform 1. It is easy to go to the wrong platform if you do not pay attention. To get to the tronco ovest turn right out of the ticket hall and go past the news-stand and Macdonalds right to the end of the platform.

Outside the station is a large square where the urban buses arrive, including the airport bus. If you wish to check out the inter-urban buses from Pisa to Lucca, walk down the avenue directly opposite the front of the station for one block. At the end of the block, turn left and walk 20 meters; the bus station is on the opposite corner of the first road coming in from your right.

bus

The buses to Lucca leave from the triangular island in front of the bus station. Last time I looked they were run by a firm called Lazzi, but that may have changed. Go into the bus station to get information and tickets. The ticket to Lucca costs in the region of €4.

train

The train service to Lucca from Pisa is marred by gaps of two hours at some times of day. Do check the timetable at trenitalia.it for details. If you have a long wait for a train, you can take a walk around Pisa leaving your luggage at the left luggage, to be found at the eastern end of platform 1 (turn left out of the ticket hall and go to the end of the platform. You will find a passageway leading to the left: go down there and to the right.)

You may have to change at Lucca, but, although it is shown as a separate service in the timetable, the same train sometimes continues from Lucca up the Serchio valley to Bagni di Lucca. The train is a service whose ultimate destination is Aula (or Piazza al Serchio). Journey time to the stop nearest to Tereglio, Bagni di Lucca, is about an hour and ten minutes, and the fare from Pisa is something under €4.

Note that Tereglio is not within walking distance of the stations, so you will need to make some other arrangements for getting from the Serchio valley (along which the train runs) up the Fegana valley and then up the hill to the village. If you are planning to do this, please discuss it with us. Taxis are not easy to find, and a car is recommended.

car

The car journey from Pisa is divisible into three sections:

[225/aero-vu.h.jpg]

1 - Pisa to Lucca

Very simple: Follow the road signs. There is a main road (blue signs) and a motorway route (green signs). To get onto the N12 main road, follow signs in Pisa. When Lucca is not signposted, follow 'Firenze' signs. Depending how you leave the airport, you may either skirt east of the town or drive through much of the centre. It gets very congested, so expect delays.

For the motorway, follow the green signs to the A12 and A11 from the airport. You need to take the direction 'A12 Genova' and drive as far as the Pisa Nord junction before peeling off for Firenze and Lucca. The drive from Pisa to Lucca is less than half an hour. At Lucca, you may leave on either 'Lucca ovest' (which is to say 'west') or 'Lucca est' (east). Either way, follow signs for the centre (centro), then the signs for Abetone.

general map

This is an extract from multimap.com with the road to Tereglio added. Tereglio is only shown at larger scales on the original, but it is a good map to navigate by, and you can zoom in to bigger scales.

2 - Lucca to Bagni di Lucca

The signs to Abetone will lead you past the historic fortified town of Lucca on your right, and after several roundabouts, you will be directed away from the walls down an avenue. At the end of the avenue, still following signs for Abetone and Barga, you will be directed to the right, onto the road that follows the river up the valley towards the Garfagnana.

In fact there are parallel roads on each side of the river. That on the left is a slightly better road, but heavily trafficked. Don't worry which side of the river you find yourself on. Keep following the signs for Abetone in either case. If you find you have been directed across the river, and the river is now on your right, you will eventually be directed back across the river.

You keep following the Abetone signs until you get to Chifenti. At this point, about 40 km from Lucca, the road to Abetone is straight on, up the Lima valley, but you need to turn left towards Barga and Aula. You immediately cross a long bridge, and a few hundred meters on, the road makes a sharp left turn round a petrol station. The railway station of Bagni di Lucca is down the road on the left before the petrol station. On your right is the road into Fornoli and Bagni di Lucca. Do not turn down either road, but follow the main road around to the left.

3 - Bagni di Lucca to Tereglio

The road goes up for about 200m, followed by a sharp right turn. After another kilometer, there is a further sharp left and sharp right bend and the next section of road brings you down to a wide roundabout after which you can see a high bridge over the railway. Take the first exit from the roundabout, in effect a right fork. It is signposted to Vitiana and Tereglio.

The road passes some factories and turns up Valfegana, the Fegana valley. Drive straight on following signs for Tereglio. You will see Vitiana and then Tereglio high on the hill on your left. Eventually the road swings to the left across the river and begins a series of hairpin bends as it climbs to the village of Tereglio. There are 10 hairpin bends. On the way up you will see a road off to the left towards Vitiana (on the fifth haipin bend), and from the very last bend another to the right towards the Orrido di Botri. At last you arrive at the northeastern end of the village, where there is a car-park. Turn left when you arrive at the first buildings of the village, opposite the road to Lucignana. The road passes to the right of the houses. You will see a warning that the road is only 2.2m wide. The car park is at the top of the slope. Leave the car park on foot through the gateway opposite the entry. Follow the road along the left side of the town and go in through the arch. The road winds along between the houses. The first part is called Via di Piastronata. Then it becomes Via di Castello. La Fagiana is number 23 and you will find it on yor right.

and a fourth section: alternative route to reach the southwestern end of Tereglio

The road Tereglio arrives, as previous stated, at the northeastern end. There is an alternative road that reaches the southwestern end, nearer to the house. In this case you will have to walk uphill to get to the house.

For this route, take the left fork at the fifth hairpin bend. It is signposted to Vitiana and to the restaurant "La Crepa". Follow the road for a little more than a kilometer and look out for a sign to the restaurant. This is a steep right turn sharply backward up the hill. Follow this narrow road until you arrive under the village. You will find some parking space on the left side of the road under trees. Opposite you will see a sign "Bruno's Garden". Park and go up the steep track towards the village. When you arrive at the houses, turn left along the tarmac road and enter the village between the houses. You come to a "T" junction with an archway over the road to your left. Go that way and you will pass the restaurant "La Crepa" on your left, then the church on your right. The next section is stepped and the road zig-zags to reach the beginning of Via di Castello. La Fagiana (number 23) is on your left about 30m after yet another archway crosses the road.
