the locality

the Garfagnana

Tereglio is located in an area traditionally known as the Garfagnana. This southern part of the Garfagnana is also described as the 'Media Valle', the middle valley of the Serchio river.

The Garfagnana is an exquisitely beautiful and varied area. The Serchio valley is narrow and the mountains on each side are the dominant features. To the southwest are the Apuane alps, a range of peaks that are unusually varied in their shapes, so that every panorama that includes them is fascinating as well as spectacular. To the northeast lies a section of the Appennine alps. Tereglio is situated along the crest of a spur of hill climbing intothe Appennines, bracketed between two valleys, that of the Suricchiana and that of the Fegana. The next valley south is the larger river Lima. Bagni di Lucca lies about 6 km south of Tereglio at the mouth of the Lima valley, which winds up into the Appennine alps, giving access to the ski resorts at Abetone. In the summer months, the Lima is much used for kayaking.

The area is characterized by a very dispersed population. There are small villages and hamlets scattered in the complex topography, every village seeming to have found a unique and different way of fitting in to the varying slopes. It is difficult to make a short list of destinations to explore, as almost all are picturesque. There are good restaurants everywhere too, some in the most improbably remote places.
